Very interesting study piece illustrating the development of background meshes in bobbin lace. Mesh known as "Tresses with open hook joins" looks a bit like a Valenciennes ground, but is worked with far less bobbins and pins.
A great piece for lace historians and connoisseurs.
About 14 inches long, about 3 1/2 deep. Top edge is missing; was apparently cut off at some point from a deeper flounce.
