Compare Swiss and Chinese qualityCompare Swiss and Chinese qualityCurrent white embroidered handkerchiefs from China imitate Swiss designs, but do not match up in quality.

Swiss handkerchief detail is on the right, Chinese on the left.

- Base fabric has a much more open, less stable weave.

- Thread used for embroidery is much thicker and less silky. Individual stitches can be seen in motifs, where Swiss embroidery stitches disappear as a continuous silky surface.

- Embroidery in the Swiss handkerchief is worked closer. Compare, for example, the spacing in the ladderwork. Stitching along the edge in the Chinese embroidery is spaced wide apart.

- Motifs have more subtle, graceful shape in the Swiss embroidery. Petals, for example, taper at the ends.
