Section of a Gros Point needle lace deep edging in a warm caramel color. The piece contains a library of wonderful needle lace decorative stitches.
Characteristics that define it as 19th century rather than seventeenth century: the fact that it is in perfect condition is first of all a flag that it is a mere hundred years old rather than older. It apparently has never been used.
The design is a little stiff and perfect rather than the more loose and meandering design typical of seventeenth century Gros Point. Finally, the outlines around all the motifs is very uniform -- not tapering as in most early Gros Point. The very open stitching in the larger motifs also is not characteristic of early Gros Point.
Size: 13 inches long, 4 inches deep.
